This is a recast of the original coin from the Platrides Family Collection. This Stater of Phaistos was struck in Ancient Crete between 300 B.C and 270 B.C. This particular coin featuring the mythical Talos is by far one of the most unique and impressive coins issued by this Minoic city. Phaistos was the second most important city of Crete after Knosos. The front of the coin features Talos. Talos was an anthropomorphic (human like) machine created by the Greek Olympian God of Fire Hephaestus and gifted to the ruler of Crete Minoas in order to protect the Island. Talos came to life by drinking a life-giving liquid called Ihor. He then run around Crete three times a day protecting the island's borders from foreign invaders. On this coin, Talos is portrayed throwing a huge bolder onto an oncoming enemy ship. The rear of this coin portrays the Cretan Bull. The Cretan Bull which is a very common symbol in almost all coins struck in Ancient Crete, symbolizes the Greek Olympian God Zeus during his metamorphosis in order to kidnap Europa or the King Minoas' famous Black Bull. In either case, the Bull's stance is in attack mode.
